Most of the mailboxes for sale nowadays that can be found on the internet conform to EN13724. This is a European standard set out to ensure that a mailbox meets certain requirements with respect to accepting letters and keeping those letters safe.
For architects, developers, and management companies, specifying EN13724 compliant post boxes is often a prerequisite for building insurance and "Secured by Design" accreditation. Below, we break down the four key pillars of this standard.
The standard dictates that the aperture (the letter slot) must be able to accommodate a standard C4 envelope (229mm x 324mm) without folding or damaging the contents. Crucially, it also mandates the inclusion of anti-fishing baffles. These are internal plates angled to prevent unauthorised hands from reaching through the slot to retrieve mail.
Security is graded within the standard. An EN13724 compliant box must demonstrate a specific level of resistance against forced entry. This includes the strength of the door, the quality of the 10-disc security locks we provide, and the "jemmy-resistance" of the frame itself.
Given the British climate, this is a vital aspect of the standard. Compliance ensures the mailbox has undergone salt-spray testing to guarantee it will not succumb to rust or structural failure. This is particularly important for our clients in coastal environments where salt-air is a constant factor.
While often discussed alongside DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) requirements, EN13724 suggests that for a bank of mailboxes to be considered "accessible," the apertures should be positioned between 600mm and 1800mm from the finished floor level (FFL).
Note: For more detailed information on accessibility, please view our DDA Height Compliance Guide.
By choosing EN13724 compliant units from Post Boxes UK, you are ensuring that your project meets the highest European standards for mail delivery, resident security, and long-term product durability.
